Writing Marathon
Just you, us, and your writing project!
Classes are over for the semester, and whether you began work during the Christmas break or have yet to crack a book, the due date for final papers continues to approach. Whether you need a little push to get started, help with that last sentence, or even just a place to work and write, the Writing Center's Writing Marathon is here to help. The Marathon offers students a place to come and work, ask questions, learn, and, most importantly, write their final papers (or any other writing!). Our Writing Marathon is part of a lead up to our annual Long Night of Procrastinated Papers event which will be held on March 5th.
When: March 2nd - 4th, 2020 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (10:00-17:00)
Where: Philologicum (Ludwigstraße 25)
What: Individual writing help (in both English and German), Speakers and writing workshops (some offered in English or German), quiet areas for students to work and speace to meet with other students/writers to work collaboratively, and coffee (and other snacks).
Registration: Registration (in German) for the Marathon is open until the day before the marathon begins (March 1st, 2020). The Marathon is free to attend, though we ask you to register via our registration form so we can properly plan the event and provide the best experience possible for students. Walk-ins to the marathon, speakers, and workshops may be considered, though a place can not be guaranteed without registration.
Individual Writing Help: Our team of writing tutors will be present at the event to offer assistance to any participants in the marathon. To meet with a tutor, please speak to the check-in desk where you will be matched with a tutor who will assist you. Tutors are available for both German and English writing. Monday, March 2nd
Speaker 1: Benjamin Rücker, Recherche-Essentials (in German)

Recherche-Essentials: Wie komme ich schnell und unkompliziert an geeignete Fachliteratur, und das auch 'last minute' unmittelbar bevor ich eine Hausarbeit schreiben muss? In diesem Impulsvortrag bekommen Sie in ca. 15 Minuten einen Überblick über einige wichtige Recherchetechniken. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich primär an Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler/innen, aber die Methoden sind prinzipiell auf alle Fächer übertragbar.
Speaker 2: Megan Bosence, M.A., Quoting Instead of Plagiarizing: Rules of Citation (in English)

Everyone deserves a little credit where it's due. Which is why it is so important to cite the sources you have used in your assignments and term papers. This quick impulse workshop will teach students the benefits of citing sources, defining the material they need to cite, and discussing options for incorporating source material into their own writing.
Workshop 1: Schreiben statt Leiden: Strategien für die effektive Textproduktion (in German)

Keine Lust zu Schreiben, Prokrastination, die Angst vor dem weißen Blatt - die Gründe, nicht in den Schreibfluss zu kommen, sind vielfältig. In diesem Workshop üben wir Techniken, wie man einfach und schnell Text produzieren kann: Motivationsstrategien, Schreibtechniken und der Umgang mit dem inneren Kritiker sind nur einige Aspekte, mit denen wir uns auseinandersetzen.

Speaker 3: Julia Scott, Tomato Writing: The Pomodoro Technique (in English)

The Pomodoro technique is a time management technique that encourages you to work with time instead of against it! Let's talk about increasing your productivity and helping you to improve your attention span.
Speaker 4: Dipl.-Phys. Raphael Wiegand, B.A., Zitieren statt Plagiieren: Zitierregeln (in German)

Fragen zu 'korrekten' Quellenangaben und zum 'richtigen' Zitieren gehören wohl zu den häufigsten Problemen beim Verfassen von Seminar- oder Abschlussarbeiten — dabei sollte doch eigentlich alles ganz einfach sein... In einem kurzen Impulsworkshop werden wir über die Vorteile sauberen Zitierens und auch über Grenzfälle und Schwierigkeiten sprechen.
Workshop 2: Konventionen in akademischem Deutsch / Conventions in Academic English (in German and English)

Jede Sprache hat ihre eigenen Bestimmungen, gemäß derer wissenschaftliche Texte verfasst werden (sollten). Selten werden diese Vorgaben explizit: Besonders für Menschen, die nicht in ihrer Muttersprache akademisch schreiben, stellen diese Konventionen hohe Hürden dar. In dem Workshop wollen wir kontrastiv erkunden, wie sich im Englischen und Deutschen besagte Stilistik unterscheidet und was zu beachten ist, wenn man komplexe deutsche oder englische Ideen in die jeweils andere Sprache „umdenken” möchte.
Academic texts (should) follow certain so-called "rules", which vary from one language to another. Nevertheless, such specifications are rarely delineated explicitly. This can become a huge obstacle, especially for those writing academic texts in a foreign language. In this workshop, we are going to investigate the differences between academic German and English. Therefore, we will approach these two varieties in a contrastive way as we consider what we do when we "trans-think" an idea from one language into another.

Speaker 5: Susanne Meisch, Faden verloren? Roter Faden beim Schreiben (in German)

Was ist eigentlich dieser Rote Faden, von dem immer alle reden? Und warum ist der so wichtig? Und wie bekomme ich ihn in mein Schreibprojekt? In diesem 15-minütigen Impuls wiederholen wir die Grundlagen zum Roten Faden und zur Leserführung und wie man sie in die Arbeit mit einbaut.
Speaker 6 - Rachel Birrel, Off the Tracks? The Golden Thread in Writing (in English)

In this impuls, participants will learn the main ideas, components and real life examples of a Golden Thread. Whether it be a public speech, formal paper or a persuasive essay, a Golden Thread helps an argument remain both informative and captivating. It works by creating a single narrative, in which the reader is guided from headline to the final sentence of a concluding paragraph.

Anhand verschiedener Übungen entwickeln wir die Struktur Ihres Schreibprojekts weiter. Dabei werden Sie auf Ihrem individuellen Stand abgeholt - sei es das Erstellen einer ersten Gliederung oder die Strukturierung eines ganz konkreten Kapitels oder Abschnittes.
